Anti Pop Hip Hop Sonar08 (eng)

That electronic music these days is almost entirely based on the beat, is, like it or not, a fact. That the beat is what is at the heart of Hip Hop is well known. Hence, that Barcelona’s Sonar would begin to incorporate more and more Hip Hop in it’s program was to be expected.
Certainly it won’t be M.O.P to bomb the stage., and it can be excluded that DJ Pemiere will entrance the audience from behind the console; the kings of these three days of festival in Bcn (19/20/21 June) will be Anti-pop Consortium, who, reunited since August of 2007, are once again aiming to continue to break borders between genres. When they were first released in 2000 on Warp records, they scandalized beat purists by mixing sounds and structures more akin to the likes of Autechre than any Hip Hop group.

The contamination of Rap with input from other genres seems to act as an underlying concept for this year’s edition of Sonar. From the program we can expect Weird-Electro Hip Hop, resident Ed Bunger, with DJ Mehdi on the stage with A-Track and Kid Sister. Following will be DJ Akne with some old school Hip Hop with a touch of UK Punk-Oi spirit.
What to expect from the sleeves of D.I.R.T.Y. member and re-edit genius, mister Pilooski?
Also in theme, Ninja Tunes’ Daedalus and The Heavy, will indulge us with their elaborations on Funk.
And finally, just so everybody gets the idea, the quality turntablist skills from Marocco of DJ Key – without a doubt, Hip-Hop to the core.
